Office of Faculty Development

The UAB Pediatrics Office of Faculty Development (OFD) exists to support the individual career development of our faculty and to advance institutional and departmental goals. The office is led by Tina Simpson, M.D., vice chair of Faculty Development, and April Spencer, MBA, program manager.

The OFD seeks to create an academic environment and programs that 

  1. support, enhance, and reward the professional activities of faculty;
  2. promote recruitment, retention, and academic career advancement of all faculty;
  3. enhance leadership development; and
  4. foster diversity, equity and inclusion.

In addition to professional development coaching, the OFD provides individual consultation on topics such as: 

  • Transitioning to a Faculty Position
  • CV Preparation Assistance
  • Promotion Readiness Consultation
  • Mentorship Identification and Education

The OFD offers CME opportunities through its 4th Fridays Lunch and Learn Series and Leadership Development Series. These series transitioned to a virtual environment this year and included presenters from UAB Heersink School of Medicine Office for Diversity and lnclusion and the Collat School of Business Professional Development Office.

Leadership Development Journal Club
Graduates of the departmental Coaching Circles Program participate in a monthly leadership journal club to foster ongoing leadership development and peer coaching opportunities.

Pediatric Faculty Excellence Awards
The OFD led the nomination and voting process to select and recognize outstanding pediatric faculty. Recipients of this year’s awards are listed in the Department of Pediatrics Faculty Achievement Award section.

New Faculty Recognition
The OFD recognized 25 new pediatric faculty at the October Department of Pediatrics Faculty Meeting.

New Faculty Orientation
In September, the OFD sponsored a virtual half-day seminar covering issues relevant to new faculty, such as crucial conversations, wellness and career development.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
The OFD helps coordinate the activities of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council, which includes trainee, faculty and staff committees.
